In this class the student will explore quilting with the walking foot, and its possibilities.  You will be taught the tricks of channel quilting and matchstick quilting.
We will touch on soft curves, and students will be taught to create soft curves and a flower design, with the walking foot.
All these techniques can be done on your domestic machine

Class Requirements:

  • Sewing Machine: Serviced, Cleaned, Oiled and in good working order. An extension table will be useful, but NOT required.
  • Walking foot. (If you have questions about this, please contact me) If you have a Pfaff machine, bring all your normal feet.
Dual feed, all the feet that work with the dual feed. All the stitch plates that go with your machine.
  • Guide bar, or guide bar/seam guide that works with your walking foot or machine and knee lift.
  • Needles: Quilting Machine Needles 80/90. If they are not available for your make Machine, Universal machine Needles 80/90. Extra machine needles.
  • Thread: Any Cotton thread for this class. I recommend Aurifil, 50, or Guterman 50.
Preferably a colour that contrasts with your practice sandwiches. Same thread and same colour thread on top and bobbin. If your machine has the normal size bobbin, bring 2 x bobbins, already filled and wound up with the thread of your choice.
  • Painters tape or masking tape
  • Water soluble fabric marker
  • Quilting Gloves
  • Hem gauge or small ruler
  • 6” x 24” acrylic ruler
  • Practice Sandwiches:    Prepare the following practice quilt sandwiches. With top, batting and backing. They have to be whole cloths and made with solid fabric. They need to be basted and ready to quilt on.  Spray basted quilt sandwiches will be easier to mark and are recommended. You can use calico. These will be your practices blocks, and can be referred to in future.
    - 1 x block measuring 12” x 18”, for testing your machine. The batting has to be 1” longer than the top and backing.
    - 1 x practice block measuring 10” x 12”. Channel Quilting and Matchstick Quilting.  Top, back and batting can be the same size.
    - 1 x practice block measuring 10” x10”  for gentle curves
  • Bring a cushion to sit on.
  • Remember a lead and plugs.
